Illustrator also benefits greatly from the new tabbed document interface, found elsewhere in CS4. The mode now displays a breadcrumb trail to assist you in navigating the hierarchy of grouped objects and paths in your work.Īn improvement to the Appearance panel lets you edit multiple object characteristics and hide or display attributes the same way you'd turn layers on and off in Photoshop. And the already-useful Isolation Mode has become a lot more so when it comes to helping you sort through a tangle of vector paths to single out the one you want to edit. Smart Guides now sport a pop-up readout of coordinates, just as in InDesign CS4, to help you position objects. That's about it for big new features, but you'll find quite a few refinements of existing capabilities that do a lot to improve the overall user experience. Paint with the brush and complex overlapping strokes combine into a single vectorized "blob." In my testing, the feature worked very well with input from digital pen tablets such as those made by Wacom, and it certainly helps add an organic feel to both the act of creating vector art and to the art itself.- Next: Illustrator Refinements CS4's new Blob Brush is sort of the inverse of the Eraser.
In CS3, I liked the ability of Illustrator's Eraser tool to wipe through vectors as if they were pixels, invisibly doing the math to adjust the paths on the fly. It's great that the essential ability to add transparency to gradients has at last come to Illustrator. But there's also an excellent gradient control bar that appears right on top of the gradient in the document, giving a hands-on feel to your adjustments. Just as in Photoshop CS4, you can click and add color stops to a gradient in the Gradient palette, specifying an opacity percentage for each stop you create. The Photoshop-style interface for handling transparency makes for a seamless transition from one app to the other. I also really like the implementation of another long-awaited newcomer: a feature that lets you add transparency into Illustrator's gradients. The multiple-artboard feature goes a long way toward satisfying the many who have been waiting for something like multipage support, and it's a much better solution than some sort of "pages panel" would be.

You can export each board as an individual file or all of them in one multipage PDF document. Simply drag the Artboard tool into the workspace and a new artboard appears in the document, which can have up to 100 boards of varying sizes. The biggest overdue feature in the new Illustrator is the multiple-artboard capability, which lets you easily work on numerous related documents within a single file, sharing assets and settings freely.
